Southern Soul Music Festival retuns to Richmond for another year. With roots dating back to the 1960s, Southern soul is a rich blend of blues, country, R&B, and gospel. Noted Southern soul artists include Otis Redding, James Brown, and Rufus Thomas. With Southern soul receiving a huge surge of popularity during recent times, this year's lineup includes Tucka, Pokey Bear, and Karen Wolfe. The festival takes place from 3 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 15 and tickets are $85.

After a successful debut in 2022, Over the James is coming back for a second time. The festival is the brainchild of AVAIL, the legendary Richmond-based punk-rock band. After disbanding in 2007, the group reunited in 2019 and staged the festival, named for their iconic 1998 album, as their "homecoming" show. AVAIL will be joined by Gaslight Anthem, Snapcase, Dragonship, City of Caterpillar, and Strike Anywhere. Showtime is 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, and tickets are $45.

Enjoy great music in support of an even greater cause at JamPacked. Festival organizers have partnered with Keep Virginia Beautiful to promote environmental awareness. In order to practice what they preach, JamPacked is committed to create a waste-free event using only recycled materials. In addition to Lettuce, Feel Free, and other top jam bands, the festival features craft beers from dozens of local and regional breweries. JamPacked opens at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 12. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $125 for VIP admission, which includes a special viewing/listening tent along with beer and food vouchers.

In the downtown area, there are always plenty of opportunities to take in the local art scene. There's still time to check out the So it appears exhibition at the Institute for Contemporary Art before it closes on July 16th. There's nothing like the sound of the blues in the air on a sultry summer night. Oteil & Friends features a lineup of incredible musicians headlined by Oteil Burbridge. As a highly respected bass player, Oteil was a 15-year member of the Allman Brother Band, later becoming a founding member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band. One of the friends joining Oteil onstage is Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts and a noted guitarist in his own right. Showtime is 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 17. Tickets are $35 for lawn seating and $45 for premier front-of-stage seating.
