As one of the earliest venues built specifically for movie-going, the Byrd Theatre was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1980. Our real estate agents love participating in these great activities at the exquisitely-designed historic space.
- Private Movie Parties
Feel like a real Hollywood insider when you and your friends attend a private movie party at the Byrd. Just provide the theater with a DVD or Blu-ray copy of your film two weeks in advance and start planning your guest list. Dress in your movie premiere finest or relax in your PJs ... it's your choice. A tax-deductible donation of $450 includes up to 40 guests. That's less than the cost of an actual movie ticket. Price includes one beverage and unlimited popcorn for everyone, with candy, wine, and beer available for purchase.
- Private Gaming Parties
Big-screen HD TVs are great, but how would it feel to play your favorite video game on a cinema-sized screen? Wonder no more when you and your friends/competitors head to the Byrd for a private gaming party. Bring your HDMI-compatible gaming system to the theater and get ready for some fun. A tax-deductible donation of $350 reserves three hours of game time for up to 10 guests. Enjoy one free beverage and unlimited popcorn, with candy, wine, and beer available for purchase.
- Classic Organ Performance
During the silent film era, theater owners needed a way to keep audiences entertained by sound as well as sight. Enter the pipe organ, which provided musical accompaniment to match the action on the screen. Saturday showings at the Byrd are preceded by a classic organ performance on the theater's Mighty Wurlitzer. This impressive instrument has been in continuous use since its debut on Christmas Eve in 1928. In traditional dramatic fashion, the Mighty Wurlitzer rises from beneath the stage along with organist Bob Gulledge, who performs a 15-minute pre-show concert.
- Family Matinees
Throughout the years, movies have been a popular family-friendly activity. The Byrd is happy to keep that tradition going with Saturday matinees. At 10 a.m., the theater screens a beloved film that's appropriate for all ages, such as The Never-Ending Story, a charming fantasy about a boy and a magical book. Some showings are sensory-friendly, with lights on and low sound. Take a break from the cookie-cutter multiplexes and watch a film as they were originally intended to be viewed. Tickets are $5 per person and may be purchased in advance on the website.
- Movie Night
Of course, the Byrd was designed to serve as a luxurious "motion picture palace," and there's no better place around Richmond homes for sale to see a film. Whether you're on a date or spending time with friends, movie night at the Byrd is a treat for everyone. Programming is a mix of first-run films and a curated selection of past favorites, including Blue Velvet, Moonstruck, and Risky Business. Tickets are $8 per person and may be purchased in advance on the website.
